There is a lot of on-going talk about company-sponsored wellness programs and whether or not they work. Of course, I’m no expert, but I can share my personal experience about how my employer’s wellness program helped me.
First of all, I have to admit that just having a program available was not enough to motivate me into action. A company-provided wellness reimbursement benefit and a fitness benefit through my health insurance was already available to me, but I was not taking advantage of either. It was only when I decided that I was ready to make some changes did it matter.
I had spent several years making half-hearted attempts to get fit – all with the same “no change” result. Just as I was starting to think about the next program I could try my employer set-up onsite Weight Watchers meetings. I realized that it was not going to get any easier than on-site meetings and two wellness reimbursement benefits, so I committed myself to getting healthy and signed-up.
That was in 2008, and I have maintained my healthy lifestyle as a lifetime member at Weight Watchers ever since – all thanks to the wellness programs available to me through my employer.
What’s an employer to do? Communicate to employees often about the wellness programs provided and about wellness in general. When employees are motivated and understand how their employer can help, they will be more likely to take advantage of these benefits and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
